The GWN Tri takes place on July 7, 2013 in Stony Plain, just 30 minutes or so outside Edmonton. I love that it is local and we can save time and money on travel and lodging. It's not a huge race (just 900 athletes) so in that perspective, I don't think it will be so overwhelming. I'll be training with a local tri team that has quite a bit of experience with this race and I know that being able to access the course in training will be a huge advantage.
So body, I plead with you: please give me 2013. Please don't be difficult. I will treat you better than you've ever been treated. Just come along on the ride, and let me live this dream out.
If you're a loyal blog reader, you are also familiar with the heart issues in my family. I should note that I did not clear this with my cardiologist in Pittsburgh. I have been feeling fine while training, even with my HR spending quite a bit of time in Zone 5 during cycling. Following the results of my father's DNA work, I have been instructed to undergo yearly tests to make sure that I am not showing signs of HCM. So at this moment I am fine, but will continue to put my health first.
In other non-triathlon news, we've got quite a bit of snow here. I know, I sound like a broken record. It's finally safe to drive (the streets were not salted nor plowed previously - it was like skating on a giant ice rink) and the weather has warmed up a bit, so the dogs have been enjoying the good life at the park. And when they come home, they warm up in front of the fireplace.
