Yep, that was Shaun's reaction at Trader Joe's this past weekend when I picked up four packages of Roasted Seaweed Snacks. Yes, I said Roasted. Seaweed. Snacks. I mean, they were $.99 and I don't come to Trader Joe's often, so of course I was going to stock up! Nevermind that I'd never even tasted them before. Just trust me on this one, Shaun ;)
The back story to my purchase stems from yesterday's post...life's curve balls. Knowing I was going to not be exercising much for two weeks and spending more time sitting around than usual, I've gone out of my way to eat healthy. OK, maybe I freaked out about it and thought I was going to get fat and never look good in a swimsuit again. I'll admit it. I'm a girl and these things happen to us!!! But it's probably been one of the best things that's ever happened to me because I made the decision to cut a lot of CRAP out of my diet and focus on fresh fruit, veggies, proteins and whole grains, even adopting a somewhat vegan and gluten-free diet. Not saying I eat horribly in the first place or that this will last forever, but it's working for now. ...back to the seaweed!
I opened package numero uno yesterday and took a deep breath before eating my first piece. My initial thought was "wow - tastes like a sushi roll!" (Yes, I thought that. I know, I have many blonde moments. Erin, if you are reading this, I already know what you are thinking and am laughing about it.) But then I realized which side had the sea salt on it, so I flipped the piece over and DEVOURED it. And then I managed to eat the entire package in about 5 minutes. WOOPS?!
For an entire package, you're looking at only 60 calories, 4g of fat, 100mg of sodium, 0g of sugar and 2g of protein. By no means was I feeling full after eating this, but it did serve the purpose of a snack and convinced my brain that I wasn't super hungry anymore. And the taste was pretty darn good. Crispy, salty and almost nutty. I would totally recommend them to anyone in the mood for something different and nutritious! (Full disclosure: I gave into two Girl Scout cookies after! Not vegan, not gluten-free, but extremely delicious and personally satisfying and now they are GONE! Take that Girl Scout cookies!!)
What weird/off-the-wall snacks do you enjoy? Would love to give them a try!
